Welcome Back!

10/5/11

Coming back to my site after spending almost three weeks felt surprisingly very good.  I arrived after dark with a family friend, multiple bags full of great American things, and Plum acting like a nut in the back seat.  We stopped at the first house at the bottom of the hill.  They gave me a huge welcome, asked how I was, and called up to my family at the top of the hill.  My family, all the kids in tow, came running down to greet me and help me with my things.  All the kids were yelling my name and vying for their spot to hug me. It felt like coming home…

That didn’t last long.  A day later the kids were showing their true shenanigan ways, and the DR was quickly reminding me of ther nothing-is-easy-or-works-how-it-should-here attitude problem.  Everyone wants 5 pesos.  ”Where are my presents from New York?”  Of course the only moto ride to my neighbors’ house, breaks down in the middle of the sugar cane…not even half way there…while it’s raining.  What else should I expect?  Rats, weighing in at a solid 10 pounds, have decided to call my house home…chewing through and pooping on anything they feel appropriate (how rude).  And lastly, the three year old decided to throw my two soaps down the latrine. (Don’t worry, I still smell great).

Thank you DR, for giving me such an appropriate welcome back and throwing me straight in ready-or-not.  I wouldn’t have it any other way.

  1. 10 pound rats? Do you have your machette handy?

  2. Yeah, back to reality, huh? They must have missed you to give you such warm welcome. Do you need more soap though?
