Jarabacoa

2/12

The head of the NGO that I’m going to be working with a little (FUSABI) invited me to a health promoter conference in Jarabacoa for the weekend.  I turned it down the first time, so I felt like I had to go this time.  Honestly, I really just want to be in my site.  I’m tired of leaving.

But I’m going to look at the upside – I get to stay in a nice hotel and eat good food (all for free).  This is good timing, becuse I’ve kind of been feeling a little beat up by the campo life recently.  Ha.  I feel disgusting and like I’m falling apart.  If any of you saw me right now, you’d think the same, I’m sure.  Something crawled up my left leg and bit me continuously as it went up.  Thus my calf is swollen and bleeding under the skin.  Don’t worry this is no cause for alarm…completely normal…I think.  My other leg is covered in a different kind of bite – I think something got into my mosquitero one night and just went to town.  I’ve been sleeping for over 10 hours a night.  Get up around 8 and am falling asleep in my rocking chair by 11am.  Take a nap every afternoon and have to force myself not to sleep for 3 hours.  I’m pretty sure I’m either anemic (considering all I eat is platanos) – or half way to a full blown case of Dengue.  I have some sort of rash, too, but we won’t get into that.  At this rate, I’m assuming I’ll come home from this “nice” hotel in Jarabacoa with scabies.  This is what you get when you read the blog of a health volunteer…all ailments described in full detail, with a hint of exaggeration and some hypochondriac tendencies…I apologize.

  1. You have always had a bit of hypochondriac tendencies in you, Jessie. So I will take your description with a grain of salt. Please, please post a picture :-)

  2. I would have liked to hear more about the rash.

  3. On the up side, maybe a leper looking young woman with a limp won’t get the usual cat calls from the locals :-)

  4. Hope everything heals quickly for you! I also think I should just move down to the DR and follow you around for a month instead of doing my infectious disease rotation next year. I’ll probably learn more with you. Love you!!
